Pulling Up a Chair...

...at Wife Behind the Fire's Kitchen Table.

I think it will prove to be a really fun and interesting series!  I can't wait to see what other wives have to say.

So, to answer this week's question, how were you brought into the fire life?

Short answer:  LOVE.

Awwww.  ;)

Long answer:  My husband and I met when we were just babiesteenagers.  I was 16, he was 17.  Summer before our Senior years.  We worked together at a little independent grocery store.  I still remember his first day, when I glanced over and saw him for the first time.  I'm not really sure I believe in true LOVE at first sight, but I definitely felt a certain pull.  I had to get to know this young man.  It wasn't just that I found him to be attractive (though, absolutely, I did!).  My heart skipped a beat and then I just remember being curious.  Who is that guy?  I needed to know.

Problem was, I was SHY.  Painfully shy.  And he was OBLIVIOUS.  Painfully oblivious.  Well, painfully to ME, as a love-struck teenage girl, in any case.

So, it was kind of a slow process.  I would chat with him now and then, I'd try to arrange my schedule to coincide with his.  He was a stock and bag boy, and I was mostly a cashier.  I loved it when I'd get to go back into the aisles and stock with him, gave the perfect opportunity for small talk.

He was a volunteer firefighter/EMT.  I had no idea what I was getting into.  Go ahead, laugh!  I'll wait a second.

I should have known though, for all the times he left work to go on calls.  :)

It took months for us to get together.  I turned 17.  He asked me out once...  then cancelled on me.  I was devastated.  I asked him out once...  but I was a little too ambitious and had invited him to a concert in Philly... his mom said NO way.  I can't say that I blame her.

This was taken before we were dating.  He looks mighty comfy, if you ask me.  :)

A few months later he turned 18.  I was worried at that point that my strict parents wouldn't let me date him, given his age...but, I couldn't take it anymore, I had to tell him how I felt.  I wrote it alllll out in a Christmas card.  That I gave to him in January because I didn't know he was with his dad for Christmas in another town.  I almost chickened out... but, I had to do something.  He wasn't getting my hints, and I've since learned that he generally WON'T get them unless I hit him over the headvery plainly spell it out.  So, I handed it to him and ran off not wanting to see his face while he read it.  He called me that night.  We had our first date, January 6th, 2002.  We went to the movies.  We saw "Ali."  I reached over and grabbed his hand while we watched.  It snowed for the first time of the season, that night.  A winter wonderland and a starry night sky greeted us when we came out of the theater.  He wrapped his arm around me and helped me to the car, my boots were slipping as I walked.

When he took me home, he walked me to the door, hugged me, and I pecked him on the cheek and ran into the house.

...from then on, we were stuck to each other like glue.

I really had no idea what I was getting into.  But, I'm glad I did.

I spent many hours sitting in the car or in the firehouse waiting for him to get back from a call.  I suffered near heart attacks when those same calls were toned out while we were out together and I had to be in the car with the speed demon that he became.  Suffered more near heart attacks listening to his scanner on numerous occasions.  I don't listen anymore.  It's like nails on a chalkboard, anyway...and I don't understand half of what is said.

After high school he worked for a private ambulance company for awhile, and then enlisted in the military.  He continued to volunteer when he could, whenever we were "home" for enough time to allow it.

We got married in 2004 (I asked him, I think it's a cute story, I'll have to tell it sometime...but are you noticing a trend here?  Haha!).  I was 19, he was 20.  We had two babies.  One in 2006, another in 2007.  Moved around to a few different states.  He took night classes to get his paramedic.  He was this.close to finishing when, well, we had to move again.  We spent a LOT of time apart for his work.  Military is good training for being a firefighter's wife, that's for sure.  I'll take a 24 or a 48 over an 8 month deployment any day.  It gave me a good perspective.  I'd also already had to learn to trust in him, his training, and his brothers and not to let myself be consumed with worry.

After he got out of the Navy, he worked as a medic while he searched and waited for his dream job as a career firefighter.  He found it.  It was always his plan, military, then firefighter.  He sweetly made sure I was on board with this while we were dating, but to be honest I wouldn't care if his dream was to be a garbage man.  I will encourage his career goals because I support HIM, and he does the same for me.  While I might get frustrated with the long hours that go along with his career and, quite often the unpredictability of the volunteer side, I love the sparkle in his eye when he talks about it.  He still gets that same excited look on his face that I remember from when he was 17.

See?  BABIES.

...and I still get that weak in the knees, flutter in the stomach feeling when I see him across a room... 12 years later.  I don't think that will ever change.

Graduation Cupcakes

I made these for a friend's daughter who graduated this year.  The school colors are green and white.  Not bad... :)

I used white Reese's cups, and melted down white chocolate bark to make the squares for the top of the caps, and the 2013 chocolates.

Welcome to Summer!

Almost the end of the school year!

Wow, has it gone fast!

Here is an idea to make a fun Welcome to Summer end of the school year memory with your kids!

I did this last year, at the end of my oldest's first year of Kindergarten.

I may do the same thing this year, or maybe change it up a little.

Either way, the last day of school is an exciting day and should be celebrated!! :o)

I wrapped brightly colored streamers all around our front porch, so the kids could "run" through!

I wrote "Welcome to Summer" on paper with markets, and just cut it out and taped it right on.

My youngest helped me with that part!  She was so excited for her sister to get home from school!

Her daddy took her with him to pick up our oldest, so while they were gone, I taped up .99 summer themed coloring rolls I had picked up at Walmart, and of course...

POPSICLES!!!!

Just a fun, inexpensive way to create wonderful memories for your child!

Do you do anything special to kick off the start of Summer?

Keep Calm and be Fire Wife Strong

In light of the tragic events in West, Texas, the women of FireWives have started a t-shirt fundraiser with all proceeds going to the West, Texas Volunteer Fire Department. T-shirts are $16 + $3.85 shipping. A minimum of $8 per shirt will be donated to West, Texas Volunteer Fire Department. The more t-shirts sold, the higher the donation!
Share this with your fellow fire wives and make a difference to the West, Texas VFD!

In just a few days since launching the idea, the group has raised over $6200. They have now been able to add the option of a hoodie, and the option to send a t-shirt to the wife of a West, Texas volunteer. If you are not a wife and want show support, that is a great option.
As well, FirefighterWife.com has a few t-shirt and custom art prints that donate to the families of the fallen, you can find those here: http://firefighterwife.mybigcommerce.com/support-west-texas/

Earn Cash and Prizes. Seriously!

As I'm sure you all know, I *love* taking surveys and earning rewards. It's not really a great way to make a living, but it is a great way to supplement and earn some fun things in your spare time. I earn gift cards to treat my family to a nice dinner out every now and then, or I'm able to select prizes or gift cards I can use towards making the holidays special. It really helps at Christmas! I even earn checks that I can put into savings as well.

This just came in the mail for me yesterday!  $100 from Global Test Market, just for taking surveys.

This check is going towards a fun new swingset for our girls!  They're going to be so excited when it finally arrives.

I don't always earn cash, sometimes it's prizes or gift cards, but every little bit helps!
I get asked all the time what survey companies I use, so here are a few that I work with, and have had good experiences with:

Global Test Market - If you'd like a referral, just leave me your email address and I'll send you one! :)

I also recommend YouData, where you get paid to view ads. They PayPal you payment every week!

If you like to try products and tell the world about them, check out BzzAgent for some Word of Mouth Marketing fun!  :)

MyPoints.com is also a great resource for gift cards.  They said out emails and if you click the links (to visit the advertiser) you earn 5 points.  More points are awarded for purchases, but purchases are NOT necessary.  You can also answer polls and complete surveys for points...and what I like about the surveys that MyPoints sends out, is that if you don't qualify, you often still get 10 points just for trying.  I recently cashed out for $60 in Walmart gift cards.

And don't forget about Swagbucks! Not only can you earn points for searching with them, but also for watching videos and completing surveys as well.  They have a "daily goal" and if you meet it, you get bonus swagbucks, and they add up fast.  If I make sure to make that goal daily (or even just most days), I can earn $50+ a month.  I choose Amazon gift cards, but they offer PayPal, and many other store gift cards as well.  They're one of my favorites, I recommend them highly.

Are there any that you have had good results with? I'd love to hear about them!

Magic Jellybeans!

My oldest daughter is 6 years old.  Last year she kept telling me that magic was not real.  That made me sad.  So I decided we had to do something to get her "magic" back!  She is very in to reason and logic, which is great, but we could all use a little magic!

I had seen the idea to plant jellybeans outside and grow magic lollipops.  But my dog runs around like caaaaaaraaaaazzzzzayyyy outside, and I just knew she'd gallop around the yard and decide the lollipops were now her toys since they were sticking out of *her* back yard.

So we had to modify this and do it indoors.  Besides, it was cold outside anyway.

So, after we dyed our Easter eggs last year, I pulled out some pots and some potting soil and let the girls fill their pots.  With soil.  Right.  :o)

Then, I gave them each six jellybeans.  I had already purchased the lollipops, so one jellybean to match each color lollipop.

The girls both had a blast planting their magic jellybeans!

After they went to bed, I transformed into Mrs. Easter Bunny.  Mr. Easter Bunny was SLEEPING already.  Ahem.

I knew that my scientifically minded then-five-year-old would actually dig through the pots to find the jellybeans and see if they were really magic, if I didn't attach the sticks to them like they grew out of them.  So I just gently pushed each lollipop stick into the corresponding jellybean color.

I didn't dig through the pots myself to find the already planted jellybeans though, I just used new ones.  Since they were attached to the lollipops the girls never thought to dig through the dirt looking for them.

Super cute, right?  The girls loved it, and it made an adorable centerpiece for the table too!
